A new species of Gastrosaccus (Crustacea, Mysidacea) from beaches in Madagascar OMA
Wooldridge, T.; Mees, J.; Webb, P..
Gastrosaccus madagascariensis sp.nov. is common in the surfzone of sandy beaches along the east and south coasts of Madagascar. Morphologically, it is characterised by having seven lateral spines along each side of the telson; with spines 2-4 and the penultimate spine being dorso-lateral in origin. One or two spinules are interspersed between the fifth and terminal spines. The fourth exopod segment of pleopod 3 in the male is bulbous, bearing two terminal barbed unequal spines. A robust and naked seta is also present on the same segment in the male.

Aberrant individuals of Neomysis integer and other Mysidacea: intersexuality and variable telson morphology OMA
Mees, J.; Fockedey, N.; Dewicke, A.; Janssen, C.R.; Sorbe, J.-C..
Intersexuality in the mysid Neomysis integer is described from samples collected in the Elbe (north Germany), Eems-Dollard (north Netherlands), Westerschelde (south-west Netherlands) and Gironde (south-west France) estuaries. Individuals which had an irregularly shaped or nearly symmetrically rounded telson, rather than a typically truncated one, were also recorded from the four populations studied. A culture experiment with damaged specimens revealed that all types of abnormal telson morphology found in the field can result from regeneration of damaged parts. It is concluded that both intersexuality and aberrant telson morphology are widespread phenomena among estuarine N. integer populations. Both abnormalities seem...

Annual dynamics of meiobenthic communities in the Ligurian Sea (northwestern Mediterranean): preliminary results OMA
Danovaro, R.; Mees, J.; Vincx, M..
The dynamics of meiobenthic community were investigated on sandy sediments of the pilot station of Zoagli (Ligurian Sea) between January 1991 and January 1992. Meiofaunal densities ranged between 447 (April) and 3421 (July) ind./10 cm2. Nematodes were the dominant group comprising on the average 75 % of the total fauna. Harpacticoid copepods were the second most abundant group (from 1.7 to 55.3 %) followed by Turbellaria (on the average 5.5 % of total fauna) and Polychaeta (on average 1.2 % of total fauna). The importance of several environmental parameters (such as total organic matter, grain size and RPD depth) in structuring the meiobenthic community is discussed.

Aspects of the biology and feeding ecology of the orbiculate cardinal fish Sphaeramia orbicularis (Cuvier, 1828) (Teleostei: Apogonidae) in a Kenyan mangrove forest OMA
Mees, J.; Mwamsojo, G.U.; Wakwabi, E.O..
The orbiculate cardinal fish Sphaeramia orbicularis is the most abundant teleost among the root system of the extensive mangrove forests bordering Gazi Bay, Kenya. The species was never recorded from the bay proper and it can thus be considered to be a true mangrove resident. The sampled population clearly consisted of two cohorts: the modes were approximately 65mm and 80 mm. Most individuals with standard lengths >40mm had mature gonads ; the number of eggs ranged from 4,700 to 10,000. S. orbicularis are carnivores, mainly feeding on small epi- and hyperbenthic crustaceans. Numerically, gammaridean amphipods and tanaids were the dominant prey categories in the stomachs of both size classes. Individuals belonging to...

Changes in the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area of Pomatoschistus minutus and P. lozanoi (Pisces, Gobiidae) OMA
Arellano, R.V.; Hamerlynck, O.; Vincx, M.; Mees, J.; Hostens, K.; Gijselinck, W..
The Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas) and P. lozanoi (de Buen) stock of the ebb-tidal delta of the former Grevelingen estuary was sampled monthly from September 1992 to October 1993. Sagittae were extracted and the areas of the sagitta and sulcus acusticus were measured with a digitizer. The frequency response and auditory threshold of these two sympatric goby species were determined from the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area (S:O ratio). The S:O ratio of P. minutus increased while in P. lozanoi the S:O ratio was constant with increasing standard length. The average S:O ratio of P. lozanoi was significantly higher than that of P....

Circadiel patterns in the tidal plankton of a sandy beach in Zeebrugge (Belgium) OMA
Lock, K.; Beyst, B.; Mees, J..
The intertidal fauna of a Belgian sandy beach was sampled on an hourly basis with a hand-pushed sledge to study circadiel patterns in species composition. Four assemblages could be distinguished with classification and ordination techniques. A first division separated the samples taken during daytime from the night samples. Both assemblages were subsequently divided into an ebbtide and a floodtide situation. Light intensity and tidal height were the most important variables explaining the variation in the Canonical Correspondence Analysis.

Comparative study of the hyperbenthos of three European estuaries OMA
Mees, J.; Fockedey, N.; Hamerlynck, O..
The hyperbenthic fauna of the subtidal channels of the Eems (N. Netherlands), Westerschelde (S.W. Netherlands), and Gironde (S.W. France) estuaries was sampled within a 15-day period in summer 1991. In each estuary, quantitative samples were taken at regularly spaced stations covering the entire salinity gradient from marine conditions at the mouth to nearly freshwater conditions upstream. The diversity of the samples and the distribution of the species along the main estuarine gradients were assessed. Hyperbenthic communities were identified using different multivariate statistical techniques. The species composition and the density and biomass of the dominant species of each community were compared among communities.

Diets of abundant fishes from beach seine catches in seagrass beds of a tropical bay (Gazi Bay, Kenya) OMA
De Troch, M.; Mees, J.; Wakwabi, E.O..
The composition of the diet of 14 fish species that were common in beach seine catches over the seagrass beds of Gazi Bay (Kenya) was investigated. Three trophic guilds could be distinguished based on dietary diversity and on the numerical and gravimetrical composition of the diet. Herklotsichthys quadrimaculatus, Stolephorus indicus and Atherinomorus duodecimalis were planktivores. Their stomach fullness index was low and the diet was not diverse. The main food items were harpacticoid and calanoid copepods and brachyuran zoea and megalopae. Apogon thermalis, Fowleria aurita, Paramonacanthus barnardi, Mulloides flavolineatus, Lutjanus fulviflamma, L. argentimaculatus and Gerres...

Distribution and abundance of shallow water hyperbenthic mysids (Crustacea, Mysidacea), and euphausiids (Crustacea, Euphausiacea), in the Voordelta and the Westerschelde, southwest Netherlands OMA
Mees, J.; Cattrijsse, A.; Hamerlynck, O..
The hyperbenthic mysids and euphausiids of the subtidal shallow coastal waters (the Voordelta) and the Westerschelde estuary in the Delta area (SW Netherlands) were regularly sampled between 1988 and 1991. Two salt marshes in the brackish part of the estuary were studied in the same period. Eight mysid species and one euphausiid species were identified. The spatial and seasonal distribution patterns of all species are described. The most abundant species in the coastal area is Schistomysis spiritus, followed by Mesopodopsis slabberi, Schistomysis kervillei, and Gastrosaccus spinifer. In the marine part of the Westerschelde the same four species are dominant but densities are generally higher in the...

Early postlarval fish in the hyperbenthos of the Dutch Delta (south-west Netherlands) OMA
Beyst, B.; Mees, J.; Cattrijsse, A..
Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment. Therefore the hyperbenthos of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal zone in front of the Dutch Delta, as well as that of the subtidal channels and the intertidal brackish marsh creeks of the Westerschelde Estuary, was sampled monthly during one year by means of a sledge and a stow net. A total of 37...

Feeding of the hyperbenthic mysid Neomysis integer in the maximum turbidity zone of the Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde estuaries OMA
Fockedey, N.; Mees, J..
The diet of the mysid Neomysis integerin the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ) of three European estuaries (Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde) was investigated in spring 1993. The quality and quantity of the diet were assessed through measurement of the stomach fullness and microscopical analysis of the stomach content combined with image analyses. N. integer was found to be an omnivore which mainly utilizes mesozooplankton and detritus carbon pools. The quality of the diet did not differ between the sexes or between different developmental stages, although smaller individuals consumed fewer items. In all three estuaries the diet was dominated by Copepoda Calanoida (5-10 Eurytemora affinis...

First record of Synidotea laevidorsalis (Miers, 1881) (Crustacea: Isopoda) in Europe (Gironde estuary, France) OMA
Mees, J.; Fockedey, N..
This note reports on the presence of a well established population of the isopod Synidotea laevidorsalis (Miers) in the Gironde estuary (southwestern France). This species is new for the European fauna. S. laevidorsalis is a nonendemic cool-temperate to subtropical, shallow-water species which was probably introduced into the study area from Asia. In the salinity range of 1 to 10 g l-1 of the Gironde the species constitutes an important component of the brackish-water hyperbenthic community. The population was already present in 1975 when it was misidentified as the native species Idotea emarginata (Fabricius).

Doxomysis algoaensis, a new mysid species (Crustacea: Mysidacea) from Algoa Bay (South Africa) OMA
Wooldridge, T.; Mees, J..
Doxomysis algoaensis sp.nov. is described from Algoa Bay, South Africa where it is common in nearshore marine waters just beyond the breaker line. D. algoaensis sp.nov. is morphologically similar to D. australiensis, but can readily be distinguished by the shape and armature of the telson and the length of the exopod of the fourth male pleopod. The apical cleft is one fifth the telson length in the former species and one third the length in D. australiensis. The telson apex on each side of the cleft is also armed with five and four stout spines in the two species, respectively. In D. australiensis, the exopod of the fourth male pleopod is almost three times the...

Spatial community structure of the winter hyperbenthos of the Schelde estuary, the Netherlands, and the adjacent coastal waters OMA
Mees, J.; Hamerlynck, O..
A first assessment of the ecological importance of the hyperbenthic fauna in coastal and estuarine systems was made in December 1988 in a pilot study (41 stations) covering the Westerschelde and Oosterschelde estuaries, and part of the neighbouring shallow coastal area, the Voordelta. Multivariate analysis revealed three major gradients which could be divided into seven spatially defined hyperbenthic communities. Canonical Correspondence Analysis was applied to correlate these species assemblages with a number of environmental variables measured at each station. Species distributions in the Westerschelde appear to be primarily determined by a gradient involving salinity, turbidity and dissolved oxygen. Hyperbenthic animals, mainly the mysid...

Temporal and spatial structure in the hyperbenthic community of a shallow coastal area and its relation to environmental variables OMA
Hamerlynck, O.; Mees, J..
Monthly sampling with a sledge type gear at 24 stations in the shallow coastal area in front of the Dutch Delta (southern bight of the North Sea) shows that high densities of a variety of animals are present in the lower 1 m of the water column: the hyperbenthos. Hyperbenthic community structure is strongly dominated by seasonal fluctuations due to the sequential appearance, high abundance and disappearance of the different species of temporary hyperbenthos. In winter and early spring, when the community is dominated by its permanent residents, spatial patterns emerge. Averaged over the year, these spatial patterns are consistent with the hydrodynamic regime in the system. Sedimentation of silt occurs in the same sheltered areas where the highest biomass...
